British Concentration Camps: Laying the Groundwork for Hitler's Total Warfare

Link to video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUFMjpccvrQ

The first official use of concentration camps as a method of total warfare. Total warfare in the sense of combining the civilian and soldier spheres together in order to create massive destruction from the very core of each society, leaving its victim in a state of shock and awe. This product of the Second Boer War (South Africa) would lead to one of the darkest moments in British history, a moment that would mirror the next century of the unethical apartheid rule.

The Great Cat Massacre: 18th Century French Event

Link to article: http://www.misterdann.com/earlyargreatcatmassacre.htm

An event that showed the great rebellious and clever characteristics of the eighteenth-century French society, while also expressing the beginning of the disintegration of artisanal culture under the Old Regime (the separation of masters and workers working together peacefully). This great cat massacre expresses a message that is relative to our industrial world today. Our society's social and economic structure is formed by extreme classification, which inevitably leads to the separation and isolation of specific levels within this hierarchy, leaving the remote notion of unity aside.

Henry David Thoreau Poem: Conscience

Conscience

Conscience is instinct bred in the house,
Feeling and Thinking propagate the sin
By an unnatural breeding in and in.
I say, Turn it out doors,
Into the moors.
I love a life whose plot is simple,
And does not thicken with every pimple,
A soul so sound no sickly conscience binds it,
That makes the universe no worse than 't finds it.
I love an earnest soul,
Whose mighty joy and sorrow
Are not drowned in a bowl,
And brought to life to-morrow;
That lives one tragedy,
And not seventy;
A conscience worth keeping;
Laughing not weeping;
A conscience wise and steady,
And forever ready;
Not changing with events,
Dealing in compliments;
A conscience exercised about
Large things, where one may doubt.
I love a soul not all of wood,
Predestinated to be good,
But true to the backbone
Unto itself alone,
And false to none;
Born to its own affairs,
Its own joys and own cares;
By whom the work which God begun
Is finished, and not undone;
Taken up where he left off,
Whether to worship or to scoff;
If not good, why then evil,
If not good god, good devil.
Goodness! you hypocrite, come out of that,
Live your life, do your work, then take your hat.
I have no patience towards
Such conscientious cowards.
Give me simple laboring folk,
Who love their work,
Whose virtue is song
To cheer God along.

“Monsters exist, but they are too few in numbers to be truly dangerous. More dangerous are…the functionaries ready to believe and act without asking questions.”

We have come a long way, or have we? Let this day in history act as a model for our policies and stance today.

Today in History: McCarthy Army Hearings Begin

Link to Article:: McCarthy Army Hearings

McCarthyism is a tremendous example of the consequences of a nation that relies upon being too inclusive. Inclusive in the context of classifying what is and what is not a true American or true believer in American values. When a society resorts to strict centralization, it deprives itself from adapting an ideology that encompasses the acceptance of other belief systems. Absolute unity must be achieved through the progression of a decentralized ideal system that incorporates an accepting adaptive nature.

This Day In History: Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Begins

Link to Article: THE WARSAW GHETTO UPRISING

Remember this day as one of humanity's strongest freedom fighters struggled against an unthinkable evil. Let us pull history into our present by understanding that we still have to promote freedom in the form of justice, equality, and peace in our modern world today. Although human equality and justice has increased in the last 70 years, we still have to progressively move forward as a global society

The New Colonial Era: China's Involvement within Africa

South Africa's rich source of natural resources has lured the newly emerged (in reality, re-emerged) world power, China, into its borders. The new century marks a new beginning for South Africa, leaving its potential for success at an all-time high.
